Did you know that horseshoe crabs have TEN EYES? It’s true! They even have eyes on their TAIL! And that’s just one of the facts we learned today at the library. We are so thankful to Michelle and Chuck from the American Littoral Society for visiting today and teaching us about these ancient creatures that live right in our own Delaware Bay.
Horseshoe crabs are incredibly important to our ecosystem. Their eggs are a critical food source for migrating birds, so scientists are very interested in learning about them and their importance to the food web. Our friends from the Littoral Society are a key part of this research, and they taught us all about these living fossils. In addition to lots of horseshoe crab facts, we heard a story and then made our own paper plate horseshoe crabs. The society also brought coloring sheets, and lots of scientific specimens for hands-on fun.
